GLOBAL BIOSECURITY 2010 CONFERENCE: SAFEGUARDING AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Brisbane from 28 February – 3 March 2010

A collaborative partnership between Austral ian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease, Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity and Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre

With biosecurity emerging as a major economic, environmental and social concern 'Global Biosecurity 2010' is the first international conference and exhibition to be held in Australia that focuses on agricultural and environmental biosecurity.

"Effective biosecurity measures are vital to keeping agricultural industries, environment and community healthy, and enhancing market access for food and feed exports. Biosecurity is everyone's business," said Mr Rob Delane, Deputy Secretary for the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

"The convening of a major international conference in Australia with a focus on agricultural and environmental biosecurity is recognition of the global standing of Australia's institutions in this area, and the important role that Australia can, and should, play in biosecurity science," he said.

'Science-based risk management is a key platform of an effective biosecurity system which needs to operate effectively across the pre-border, border and post-border continuum'.

Mr Delane said Global Biosecurity 2010 provides an outstanding opportunity for representatives from biosecurity agencies, research organisations, agricultural industries, environmental organisations and other relevant stakeholder groups to keep up-to-date on world's best practice.

"Tapping into the collective expertise of those attending the Global Biosecurity 2010 conference will help enhance the ability of Australia and all participating nations to effectively manage biosecurity roles along the continuum, protect and improve their pest status and facilitate trade, travel and community development," he said.

ASSOCIATION OF FRIENDS OF BOTANIC GARDENS CONFERENCE

At the AUSTRALIAN INLAND BOTANIC GARDENS River Road BURONGA NSW
22nd – 23rd May 2010

"Secrets of the Mallee"
The Australian Inland Botanic Gardens Inc Committee of Management and the Friends of the AIBG cordially invite you to attend the biennial conference of the Association of Friends of Botanic Gardens Inc next May.

Mildura, Victoria, is the closest large centre for arrivals and also for accommodation, the town centre being seven km from the Gardens.

Buronga in NSW is a small township marginally closer to the Gardens. Conference proceedings and social activities are planned to take place at our Gardens in the relocated nineteenth century Magenta Station shearing shed, now a rustic reminder of the past but somewhat altered to suit the purpose of a reception hall.

Our speakers are respected professionals in their areas of expertise and we have chosen to continue the discussion on the challenges of reduced water availability in southern Australia. We hope to simplify complex water matters and expose some of the mysteries of the dry mallee plants and soils. As well, social aspects of volunteerism will be discussed and plenty of time has been allowed for some exciting presentations by members and interaction of delegates when we will be able to share our triumphs and ponder any problems.

PLANT GERMPLASM CONSERVATION IN AUSTRALIA

Edited by C.A. Offord and P.F. Meagher
Published by Australian Network for Plant Conservation in partnership with Australian Seed Conservation and Research

Launch, 3rd September, 2009 Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne

In 1997 the ANPC produced the Germplasm conservation guidelines for Australia - an introduction to the principles and practices for seed and germplasm banking of Australian species. Given the advances in germplasm conservation over the past decade and the need to document these, the ANPC recognised the need to update the guidelines.  In partnership with Australian Seed Conservation and Research (AuSCaR), the ANPC has produced Plant Germplasm Conservation in Australia, strategies and guidelines for developing, managing and utilising ex situ collections (2009). The new publication provides up-dated guidelines and standards for the capture, storage and use of wild-plant germplasm for long-term conservation in Australia, including the recovery of threatened plant species and the conservation of genetic diversity in the face of climate change. The guidelines have also been written so as to be accessible and useful to shorter-term projects in the restoration and revegetation industry and community sectors.

The new guidelines will be launched as part of the AuSCaR and Millennium Seed Bank Project’s (MSBP) Native Seed Forum. The forum will be held over two days to celebrate the achievements of the MSBP in Australia.

Also on the same day the Australian seed conservation community will take the opportunity to launch the strategic plan of the Australian Seed Bank Partnership. This new partnership will take on the work of AuSCaR over the next ten years to deliver a safety net for Australia’s native plant species.

BOTANIC GARDENS AT BENDIGO SET TO GROW

The Bendigo Botanic Gardens at White Hills in Victoria is undergoing significant reassessment and design as part of the City of Greater Bendigo 's commitment to the site.

A Master Plan for the rejuvenation and extension of the Botanic Gardens at White Hills is being prepared in-house by the City of Greater Bendigo 's Landscape and Open Space Planning team. The area under consideration is approximately 25 hectares and includes the original Gardens, the original acclimatization paddock (now a recreation reserve, which will be retained as such) and a greenfield site.

The proposed changes will restore the heritage section of the 151 year old Gardens, while providing a contemporary extension which also meets the roles of a botanic garden in the twenty-first century.

The original Botanic Gardens at White Hills are Victoria 's sixth oldest, having been set aside in 1857 as Bendigo 's first public open space. The Gardens are on the Victorian Heritage Register and a Heritage Significance Assessment and Strategy was completed and adopted in 2008.

The Master Plan includes the proposed extension of the Gardens into eight hectares of council-owned land to the south of the existing Gardens, fulfilling the intention of council's purchase of the land in the 1990s. The extension straddles both sides of Bendigo Creek.

A range of key elements for inclusion in the site has been formed and these include such things as intensive plant collections; education/outreach; arboretum; children's garden; and a multipurpose space for events. A Living Plants Collections Plan is also being developed.

The City of Greater Bendigo also holds – in pieces – the Nineteenth Century cast iron conservatory that once stood in the Melbourne Botanic Gardens. Council is investigating reconstructing this within the current site.

The development of the Master Plan involves ongoing consultation with stakeholders and members of the wider community. A steering committee is guiding the project and includes representatives of local stakeholders, the Friends of Bendigo Botanic Gardens and also Richard Barley, Director Melbourne Gardens , Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne . The Master Plan design is being peer reviewed by Catherin Bull AM, the Elizabeth Murdoch Professor of Landscape Architecture, University of Melbourne .

An Options Paper was released in early February to give background to the Master Plan and encourage the community to provide input into a range of issues. Amongst these are two which are certain to invoke a range of responses. One is the question of whether or not to continue the practice of holding an animal collection within the Gardens. Bendigo has an uninterrupted tradition of an animal collection since the 1860s. The other contentious issue is the retention or removal of a small open air swimming pool that was placed in the Botanic Gardens in the 1950s. This is reaching the end of its useful life, but has considerable sentimental value to the locals.

The Options Paper can be viewed at http://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/Page/page.asp?Page_Id=2815&h=0. Input into the Options Paper is not restricted to locals and BGANZ members and other interested parties are also encouraged to have a say.

HORTICULTURAL APPRENTICESHIP AWARD - DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND

A huge drop in the number of skilled people in amenity horticulture was the result of horticultural apprenticeships being effectively abandoned in 1991. In 2003 staff at Dunedin Botanic Garden successfully reintroduced apprenticeship training to help remedy this shortage of professionally trained horticulturists. The success of this apprenticeship training programme over the last 6 years has now been recognised by industry partners 4Trades Apprenticeship Training Trust, the Otago Chamber of Commerce and Community Trust of Otago with the presentation of a Certificate of Recognition to the Dunedin City Council Botanic Garden.
