Guardians of the Green Conservation Trail

Stop by Christchurch Botanic Gardens and explore special plants and collections that curators past and present have worked to safeguard for the future.
Grab a free trail guide from the Visitor Centre or Kiosk and take a self-guided journey into the world of conservation. We’re more than just a pretty face – behind the scenes we work to rewild endangered native plant populations, discover new species and help the local and international community ensure the survival of plants for generations to come.
The terrain is mostly flat but can be slippery in places after wet weather.
An oasis in the heart of the city, Christchurch Botanic Gardens was founded in 1853 with the planting of an English oak tree. ‘Mighty oaks from little acorns grow’ indeed, and now this 21-hectare park boasts numerous collections, conservatories, mature trees and expansive lawns – all nestled within the loop of the Ōtākaro Avon River.
From the spring drifts of daffodils, spectacular summer roses, stunning autumn leaf displays and cosy conservatories to explore over winter, there’s something to delight in every season.
