Why Getting Involved with BGANZ Matters
Professional development doesn’t always happen in a classroom or at a conference. Some of the most valuable learning comes from working alongside peers, tackling real challenges, and contributing to projects that make a difference across our sector.
That’s exactly what BGANZ’s committees and network groups offer. Find out more in our webinar on BGANZ Committees demystified:
As a member-led organisation, BGANZ’s committees are where ideas become action. They provide opportunities to build leadership and governance skills, develop strategic thinking, broaden professional networks and contribute to initiatives that benefit botanic gardens across Australia and New Zealand.
Importantly, committee participation isn’t just for senior leaders. Whether you’re early in your career or have decades of experience, there is value in bringing your perspective to the table. Diverse skills, experiences and viewpoints help strengthen our network, and a willingness to contribute is far more important than previous committee experience.
Many members describe unexpected benefits from becoming involved: increased confidence, stronger professional relationships, exposure to national and international collaborations, and the satisfaction of contributing to something bigger than their own organisation. At the same time, committees have helped deliver initiatives that have had lasting impact across the sector, from professional resources and webinars to collaborative projects and advocacy.
For those concerned about the time commitment, committee involvement is designed to be realistic and sustainable alongside your day-to-day role. Members share the workload, support one another and contribute in different ways depending on their capacity.
Even if joining a committee isn’t the right fit right now, BGANZ’s network groups provide an excellent way to connect with peers, stay informed, share ideas and access ongoing professional development opportunities.
At BGANZ, professional development is about more than learning new skills—it’s about building connections, strengthening our profession and shaping the future of botanic gardens together.
If you’re looking for a way to grow your skills, expand your network and make a meaningful contribution, we encourage you to explore the opportunities available through BGANZ’s committees and network groups.
