This beautiful natural site highlights local endemic species – only those found within 200 km of Lismore. Located at 313 Wyrallah Road, Monaltrie, NSW, 3 km from the city centre and the rail trail, the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens feature approximately 4 hectares of regenerated subtropical rainforest.
The Friends of the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens have been managing and maintaining the Gardens, supported by Lismore City Council, since 1997. Now a lush rainforest, the first plantings commenced in 2002.
The Gardens boast six rainforest rooms, as well as an Uncommon Plants Garden, the Wilson’s Park Species Garden, a Sensory Garden, Useful Plants Garden, a nursery and Encounters 2020 Garden. A beautiful Hoop Pine Forest, which was planted earlier, shelters a quiet walk to the summit with a stone labyrinth. Over one hundred species of birds have been identified at the Gardens.
To preserve and conserve subtropical rainforest plants, and to educate about the Big Scrub rainforests, the Gardens are taking part in studies to understand myrtle rust and to ensure the future of many threatened and endangered species. The Gardens bring many opportunities for recreation to the Far North Coast communities of NSW. Hundreds of school students and pre-schoolers visit the Gardens annually for guided tours.
The Friends welcome volunteers to help physically maintain the Gardens and its amenities or behind the scenes with administration, research, education and guiding. Workdays are Wednesdays 8 am to 11 am. Guided Walks take place on the last Sunday of each month.
