Connect with nature, inspire your senses, and discover the beauty of Tasmania’s unique flora.

Nurturing more than 200 years of history, heritage, gardens, and nature, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens offers the opportunity to experience Tasmania’s unique range of native flora, as well as an extensive range of exotic plants, all in one walkable 14-hectare site, just minutes from the heart of Hobart.

Featuring several outstanding living collections, including significant collections of heritage trees, the secluded and picturesque Japanese Garden, the unique Subantarctic Plant House, and the site of the island’s earliest colonial kitchen garden in Tasmania.

The Gardens offers scenic locations for outdoor events, indoor function spaces, onsite dining and the Botanical Shop.

Explore the Gardens:

  • Wander through our historic gardens – the second oldest botanical gardens in Australia.
Featuring many well-preserved historic buildings and structures from earlier eras, surrounded by
    historically significant early plantings.
  • Stroll through our geographically focused collection of Tasmanian native plants, including
endemic, rare and threatened flora not often seen in cultivation.
  • Secluded and picturesque, the Japanese Garden is a popular location for relaxation and
contemplation. Emphasising traditional elements of wood, stone and water, the waterways, tea house,
waterwheel, and bridge act as a focal point for the central plantings of species native to Japan.
  • Visit our Conservatory, Pineapple House, and Subantarctic Plant House. All home to a diverse
collection of exotic and native plants ranging from tropical and subtropical plants, through to
subantarctic plants, ferns, mosses and rock from the remote and isolated subantarctic Macquarie
    Island.
