The Gordon is Victoria’s largest regional TAFE (Technical and Further Education), with a proud history of delivering vocational training since 1887. For over 138 years, we have equipped students with the skills and knowledge needed for success in their chosen fields.

Our Horticulture department has strong connections with local industry, with many of our current staff bringing extensive experience from years of working in their respective fields before joining our teaching team.

We’ve had the privilege of supporting the Geelong, Cranbourne, Melbourne and Melton Botanic Gardens by providing plants and assistance. Additionally, we maintain an eclectic collection of plants used in teaching our plant identification units. Our collection ranges from bamboos and tough perennials to a variety of rare native species. Our goal is to expose students to the wide array of plant options available in Australia, while providing a solid foundation in plant structure, form, and their uses in the garden.

As members of BGANZ, we stay current with developments in Parks & Gardens, which informs our curriculum and connects us with valuable information, plant collections and conferences.

Located at the gateway to Victoria’s west coast, Geelong offers diverse climatic conditions – ranging from sandy, coastal soils to inland clay soils and winter frosts. With variable rainfall and a rapidly growing population, there is a rising demand for horticultural enterprises and employment opportunities in the region.

We currently offer a range of horticulture courses, with around 350 students enrolling each year:

  • Certificate III in Horticulture
  • Certificate III in Parks & Gardens
  • Certificate III in Turf Management
  • Certificate III in Nursery Operations
  • Certificate III in Landscape Construction.
