Mossman Botanic Garden (MBG) is emerging as a 21st-century botanic garden with a clear focus on tropical rainforest conservation, nature-positive solutions, and community-led sustainability. Located in Mossman, Far North Queensland, the garden sits within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area—one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth—and is uniquely positioned between ancient rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef.
MBG’s vision extends beyond traditional botanic garden roles. Central to its planning is the establishment of a world-class ex-situ plant conservation facility, including the proposed Cloud House, designed to safeguard critically endangered plant species found only in the Wet Tropics. This work will contribute to global efforts in tropical plant conservation and biosecurity, while supporting long-term resilience of rainforest ecosystems.
The garden is being developed on the Traditional Lands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people, with a strong emphasis on community ownership, education, and cultural connection to Country. MBG aims to create a gateway precinct that educates and inspires visitors to care for the world’s oldest rainforest, while also providing a venue for festivals, conferences, and community events within the Douglas Shire.
In addition to its environmental impact, Mossman Botanic Garden is positioned as a catalyst for regional economic growth. Through new job opportunities, training programs, and eco-tourism initiatives, MBG will contribute to sustainable development across Far North Queensland and enhance the region’s reputation as a leader in biodiversity conservation and green innovation.
As planning progresses, Mossman Botanic Garden represents an exciting and ambitious model for contemporary botanic gardens—one that combines conservation excellence, community benefit, and an outstanding visitor experience in one of Australia’s most remarkable landscapes.
