The Hunter Region Botanic Gardens is marking its 40th anniversary, making this year’s Botanic Gardens Day especially meaningful. Visitors are invited to join in a full day of celebration, connection and discovery.

An official address will take place at 11:00am in the Environment Pavilion, featuring original members who helped establish the Gardens four decades ago, sharing their stories and reflections. Throughout the day, the Art Space Gallery will showcase a special exhibition of archival photographs, offering a glimpse into the Gardens’ rich history.

A diverse program of talks begins at 9:30am, covering topics such as bonsai, succulents, orchids, native ponds, grevilleas, rainforests, bush foods, birds and bees. Each session highlights the unique stories and expertise that have shaped the Gardens over the years.

More than just a park, the Gardens are entirely volunteer-run, with dedicated individuals contributing their passion and knowledge to plant selection, cultivation, conservation and research. On this special day, visitors will also have the rare opportunity to join limited tours of the herbarium, which is not usually open to the public.

In partnership with Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand, the Grow Your Health Challenge will also be running, encouraging visitors to engage with nature and enhance their wellbeing. This initiative aligns with the Gardens’ recently launched Mindfulness Walk, designed to deepen the visitor experience.

Entertainment will be provided by wandering minstrels, with food available from the sausage sizzle, Kookaburra Café and scone stall. Guests are also welcome to bring a picnic. Guided tours will run throughout the day by donation.

Visitors can take home a plant, become a member, or explore volunteer opportunities to support the Gardens’ future.

This is a free event, with donations warmly welcomed. As a not-for-profit organisation that receives no ongoing government funding, the Gardens rely on community support, entry fees and events to continue their important work.

After 40 years of community support, the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens invites everyone to come along and celebrate this milestone together.
