A new tropical conservatory at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra

The new Ian Potter National Conservatory is currently under construction at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

The Conservatory will be a national showcase for tropical Australian native flora from the far north and islands, including rare and threatened species.

It will become a major destination in Canberra and interpret the rich story of Australia’s tropical flora.

Presenter: Joe McAuliffe, Nursery Manager – Australian National Botanic Gardens

Joe has worked as a horticulturist and horticultural manager at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) for over 30 years.

During this time Joe has worked across various areas within Parks Australia including Booderee Botanic Gardens, Uluru-Kata Tjuta, and Christmas Island Nation Parks.

As a field collector he has travelled much of Australia collecting plant specimens for the ANBG and the Australian National Herbarium.

Joe has extensive horticultural experience in growing Australian plants and has been an important cog in the ANBG’s conservation programs.

Joe now leads the nursery team at the ANBG, currently focussing on managing horticultural operations of the ANBG’s tropical collections and the new Ian Potter National Conservatory expected to be completed sometime 2024.
